The Mission Design Center (MDC) formulates early concepts for space missions, following a structured development through several stages of Concept Maturity Level. The processes and team capabilities in the MDC support rapid response to Center and Agency opportunities, often pursuing multiple projects in parallel. Personnel have experience in generating proposals, designing spacecraft busses in support of instruments, and designing instruments in support of science objectives.
Metis currently supports the NASA ARC MDC with senior systems engineering experience in mission design and orbital mechanics for early concept definition of a broad range of satellite missions, including Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geosynchronous (GEO) orbits up to lunar, Mars, and deep space missions. Each application of flight dynamics has unique features to suit the mission objectives and constraints, such as science data collection requirements on the planet’s surface, Sun angle, communications range, and multi-spacecraft constellations. Metis provides systems engineering support, including mission proposal reviews, early concept development and mission design expertise.
